Toy pianos are miniature pianos that make me look like Schroeder when playing them. I have nine toy pianos. Some of them look like small uprights, others are grands with a lid that opens. They are made of plastic hammers and metal rods, so they sound different than a regular piano. The metal rods make them sound like bells or a xylophone. The length of the rods determine the different pitches of the instrument, so each piano is made a little differently. The out-of-tune nature of the toy piano is one of its biggest charms for me.

I grew up playing the “real” adult piano and I found the toy piano when I was 21. Since finding them, I’ve been performing on them regularly. Many composers have written for the toy piano and I have also began writing music to perform using toy piano and other trinkets. My official website is www.phyllischen.net
